Ingredient Three; associate with people who will help you get what you want!

Dr. Tom Barrett opens this ingredient with the lines –

King Solomon wrote, “He who walks with wise men becomes wise, while the companion of fools will suffer harm”

King Solomon understood that other people and surroundings had a significant impact on our lives.

For better or worse the people we associate with, in our everyday lives, rub off on us, we become in some ways like them!

So what we need to do is to surround ourselves with the type of successful people who we would like to aspire to be like!

That does not mean you have to give up on the relationships and friends you have made so far in life, but you may have to step back a little, you need to keep friends but you need to prioritize your life in your pursuit of success!

Instead of  going out with friends once a week or more in some cases, I decided that it was in my best interests to associate with other more successful people than myself, I now go out occasionally with friends and to be honest I enjoy the company a lot more now, because we don’t see as much of each other!

Look at it another way, if you associate with successful people and you become successful then by default the people who associate with you will also become successful to a certain degree!

That’s something everybody wants for their family and friends!

Inspired by others!

Chapter Three of Dare to Dream and Work to Win, covers the next two ingredients needed for direct selling, MLM, and network marketing success, I will look at those two ingredients separately, but first I want to give you an overview of this chapter.

When you have your dream and your plan ready to go, you need to realize one thing, it is through the inspiration of others that will enable you to reach your dreams with your plan.

Through this I mean that, by following and associating with like minded but successful people, especially if they are in the same business as you, will ultimately pull you forward and help mold your success.

With the internet medium we have at or beck and call nowadays, it really is simple to associate with those successful people no matter where they may be.

Find out who is successful in your business and also look for people who are actually doing and working that business successfully, see if you have anything in common and work with some of those people sharing your ideas and dreams.

Working together and building together is twice as efficient as working alone because you will learn from each others mistakes, so the more people you can work with the better! And the more successful they are means they probably have seen more failures and know how to deal with them or even avoid them!

Decide what you are willing to reschedule or give up in order to get what you want!

Dr. Barrett shows us a really apt analogy on this ingredient; that goes something like this!

Imagine a country or farm yard dog, we have all see this happen at some point, the dog sits in its yard or out front and waits for a car to pass by. As the car passes the dog chases it, the driver speeds up a little to get away secretly hoping it won’t break down. The dog never catches a car, but just think, what would the dog do if he one day managed to catch a car.

Probably nothing! And that’s the point; the dog would have no idea of what to do if it ever caught up with a car!

People around the world are a lot like this, they work hard all the time to get to some where in their lives but never actually define where that some where is, so much so if they ever got there they probably wouldn’t know it!

In business or life for that matter; we all have to be clear about what we want, so that we can decide clearly what we need to do to get what we want.

How to Determine What You Want!

Dr. Tom Barrett tells us the story on Mr. Dan O’Brien, decathlete, and how a few years before he competed in the Olympics he was listening, with other athletes, to a former gold medalist talk about his experiences.

The former gold medalist asked three questions (ask yourself these three same questions)-

1/ How many of you have specific goals for your lives?

To which every single person in the room raised their hands!

2/ How many of you have those specific goals written down?

To which almost every athlete raised their hands again!

3/ How many of you have those written specific goals with you now?

To which no one raised a hand! Not one single athlete carried their goals with them!

From that day forward Dan O’Brien carried his specific goals with him every where he went and always looked at them every day; he went on to win the gold medal for the decathlon!

Your success will be based on your goals, dreams and aspirations. Make them specific to you and write them down, add to them if you wish as you build, always keep them in the front of your mind and work towards them.

Your desire, determination, passion and energy come from those dreams and goals, make them what you want to be!

Success! It’s no Accident.

Dr. Tom Barrett’ second chapter talks about four ingredients that are needed for any direct selling or network marketing business needs, they are –

1/ Determine what you want.

2/ Decide what you are willing to reschedule or give up in order to get what you want.

3/ Associate with people who will help you get what you want.

4/ Have a plan that works; work your plan.

Each of these ingredients have their own special place in our success; so I will go over each one in a little more detail in my next few posts, but for now I would like to talk about this chapter in general and the reasons why these four ingredients are so important.

Let’s think for a moment about what we do everyday of our lives; we tend usually to leave our homes without thinking about all those little things that will get us through the day, you know things like keys, briefcase, work bag, the right clothes etc, but there is one thing that nearly everyone does not take.

That one thing that most people leave behind is their dreams; dreams allow you to envision future realities. They enrich your life not with false hope but with energy, passion and direction.

Dreams are the reason some people grow to be successful, they use their dreams to determine their lives, using the four ingredients listed above.

Why do dreams become reality for some but for most they get discarded and end up as old wishes that never materialized?

The answer lies in your beliefs, attitude, insights and skills. All of these can be learned and will be covered in the remainder of my articles on this book.

Dare to Dream and Work to Win Principle Three!

Give It Enough Time!

Ask yourself this – “when was the last time you attempted a small repair at home or on you car or something that seemed do-able and simple?” You estimated how much time, effort and money it was going to take to do that simple, easy to do repair.

Now ask yourself another question – “how soon after starting that repair did you find it was going to take longer, need more effort and cost more than you estimated?”

Most of us would answer, if being honest, recently to the first question and probably always to the second question!

Growing a business is similar in the respect that, you cannot imagine exactly how much time, effort and money it will take to get to your final success!

The task is always bigger than we imagined!

Fortunately if we give it enough time then so is the return on our investment!

Use this check list if you like to understand the concept of “give it enough time”

Be Patient! The time measurement or period for you is this – “it is the time it takes from starting the business to the time your business is generating significant revenue!

Give it enough time everyday and every week! If your business is going to grow significantly over time, you need giving it enough time on a daily and weekly basis. If you do not then your business will not grow no matter how long you are in that business.

Realistic expectations and False Pressures! Success is not about being a race horse and getting their first! It is however about being a pack horse and growing slowly but steadily always moving forward. If you only have a couple of hours a week, do not expect the same time frame for success as someone who has four or five hours a day!

Work From Home and Duplicate your Success!

Duplication The Second Principle of Dare To Dream and Work To Win!

Duplication, is really what it means!

When you first start in direct selling, network marketing, MLM etc you would have been sponsored by someone!

They show you what to do and you then find others and show them what to do and so on!

It really is that simple!

But it can be hard work!

The best advice about duplication I can give you is this-

Find the business you want to do, then find the successful people in that business, look at how they run their business and do the same! Duplicate their methods!

Even if you have the misfortune to be sponsored by a knuckle head who does not understand the business, you will be able to find successful people in that business, just follow and copy the successful ones!

When you start to do this you will find that your knowledge grows and so does your confidence and then you can start to show others how your success is going and show them how they can do the same! And so it goes on! Eventually leading to a huge team of people, some of which you may never meet!

Don’t be scared by that last statement though because in reality you are only about six or seven acquaintances away from just about any one in the world! And that’s fact!

How Consistent Effort Will Make You Money!

The first principle of Dare to Dream and Work to Win by Dr. Tom Barrett is Consistent Effort!

Discipline is the price of success. Success, greatness and character do not come from one grand moment! They come from doing those many little boring and seemingly irrelevant things one at a time! The quiet cumulative effect of these is success.

You can work your business Full-Time or Part-Time; But NOT Spare-Time! This one is simple, none of us, and I mean none of us, have any spare time, we use twenty four hours a day to do what we do before we had even heard of direct selling (network marketing, MLM). The only way to have time is to MAKE TIME! Yes it’s an inconvenience; but would you rather work all the time never catching up with yourself, or doing things with plenty of time to SPARE because you CAN!

Build your business in the “nooks and crannies” If like me, you want to start part time around your day J.O.B.(job or Just Over Broke) then you really need to understand this principle. Work in between calls or appointments, in your breaks, listen to c.d.’s whilst travelling that will build your knowledge etc, all those minutes that you usually waste! Add up to a great amount of time! “When someone says they do not have time for something, they have stated a priority not a fact”

In Network Marketing or Direct Selling, a pack horse is better that a race horse! Race horses are great in a sprint over short distances, but in direct selling, MLM or network marketing you need to have stamina, strength, determination, patience just like the “Energizer

Bunny” it just keeps going and going and going! It’s that consistent effort or sustained focus that will eventually lead you to your ultimate goal!

Seeing Through The Fog to Your Internet Business Success!

Dr. Tom Barrett, in chapter one shows us his three foundational principles for network marketing (direct selling, MLM, etc)

These are:-

1/ CONSISTENT EFFORT

2/ DUPLICATION

3/ GIVE IT ENOUGH TIME

Before I explore each one of these principles, in my next few articles, I want to share with you why so many of us get lost in the fog of network marketing or direct selling.

Those of you who have tried and failed at network marketing or direct selling, even those of you whose it’s your first attempt, will understand that, from the beginning these types of businesses look inviting and clear with lots of success just around the corner.

But if you are like me, that success never really came to me, I got lost in the fog, I was working hard but still failed at more that one business, I believe now that I was not entirely committed to those businesses!

I am now seeing some success in my present business, because I have begun to see through the fog that blinded me in the past, and I have learnt that if only I had known and used the three principles like that of DR. Barrett, then I would have had success before now!

Direct selling, network marketing, MLM, internet business, home based business, or any of the other names you probably have heard, are all here to stay!

In places like Wall Street, corporate board rooms and in the general business community, this type of business is increasingly recognized as a primary means of transacting business!

As a whole these groups and businesses were slow to embrace this type of business structure, but in today’s economic climate, they have become to realise how efficient, effective and profitable a strategy that it actually is!

Big business was not the only slow one to accept network marketing or direct selling as a legitimate and wise marketing strategy. Countless individuals have heard of it and not taken it seriously.
